The AWBT’s 8th Tour Stop – Metro Sportz Bar, Phoenix Arizona – Presented by Teague Custom Cues!
30 women came out to play in this WPBA qualifier at the awesome facility of Metro Sportz Bar in Phoenix, Arizona.
From the beginning, two women stood out above the rest. These two women were Tina Pawloski and Kristin
Haney. Both women sliced their way through the competition with ease and met up for the hot seat match. Kristin
was victorious and won the match 7 to 4 to earn her spot in the hot seat.
Tina wasn’t shaken at all! In fact, it seemed as if she became more focused than ever. She easily beat Vegas gal
Julie Nogiec by a large margin of 7 to 2 and earned her way back to challenge Kristin.
As this was a true double elimination tournament, Tina would have to beat Kristin in 2 sets of races to 7. As a
spectator, I can tell you that if anyone can be the underdog and win 2 sets in a row, it would be Tina. But would
that be the case this time?
The first set started. Tina won the lag, broke and made 1 ball, and then missed her second shot. From there
Kristin ran out and made it on the board first. The match went back and forth Kristin winning one, then Tina. Both
women were playing awesome pool. They both were making tough banks, kicks and combinations and both were
playing incredible safeties. The next thing we knew the match was tied hill – hill. On this game, Tina broke, making
2 balls, but was hooked behind the 9-ball and had to kick at the 1 ball. She hit the ball, but missed the pocket,
leaving Kristin with a shot on the 1 ball. Kristin made the 1 and the 2, but left herself behind another ball so she
could only kick at the 3 ball. The kicked and hit it, but didn’t make it, which left Tina an extremely hard shot on the
3. Tina made that beautiful shot and was left with a 3 ball out, which she ran with ease, which won her the first set
by a score of 7 to 6. That means there would indeed be a 2nd race to 7 to see who would prevail.
The second set started. This was the one that counted. This was the game that all of the women who played their
hearts out for 2 whole days would have given anything to be able to play. This time Kristin won the lag. She broke,
but nothing fell. Tina came to the table with a difficult 2-9 combo and missed, leaving Kristin a try at it. Kristin made
it, which put her on the board first. This set was very similar to the first set, both women winning back and forth until
the score was again tied hill-hill. Kristin had the break, but made nothing, leaving Tina the table. Tina sunk the 1
and 2 balls and then was left with another extremely difficult combo – this time on the 3-9. With a spectacular finish
and the crowd gasping in delight, Tina made that awesome combo, which won her the tournament, the $320 in prize
money and the coveted PAID seat into a 2006 WPBA Classic event of her choice!
Congratulations to Kristin Haney for an awesome 2nd place finish! What a way to come back to town!
And a BIG HUGE congratulations to Tina Pawloski! Not only for this win, but I’d like to mention that this was Tina’s
4th major victory in a row! She won the Amateur Nationals in September and prior to that won the AWBT’s last
Qualifier in September, not to mention her AWBT 8-ball victory the previous month of August! She’s had an
awesome few months! Every time I watch Tina play, I’m in awe by her talent and ability! You go girl!
We’d also like to give a HUGE thank you to everyone at Metro Sportz Bar! The weekend was wonderful! All of the
staff was, and is always, a pleasure to be around! The tables are in pristine condition and the food is FABULOUS!
If you are in the area of Metro Center, it is definitely a great place to spend an hour, or two, or who are we kidding,
a whole day!
The AWBT was also extremely privileged to have another raffle for a Teague Custom Cue valued at $450! The
winner was Metro Sportz Bars own JAZ! Jaz was SOOO excited to have this cue! He couldn’t wait to play with it and
ran off to play in the 8 and under tourney on Sunday night there at Metro!
