February 2nd, 2006           The Detractors

This past weekend, on our way back from the Swanne tournament in Hollywood, I was taken
aback with total surprise as one of the other three pool players in the car turned to me and
said, "You know Ron, I just want to tell you how much I appreciate all you have done for pool."
..... Say what?  Out of the clear blue (we were not even talking about pool at the time) an
Arizona pool player thanks me for all I have been trying to do over the past few years.  This
was only the second time I can ever remember being thanked for my efforts in regards to
Arizona pool.  A few minutes later, another passenger in the car says .... "I never thought I
would see the day when a higher rated pool player could stay in Arizona and play in bigger
and better tournaments than the tournaments being held in other states." ...

Don't even think I am writing this to solicit more thanks from anyone.  I know most of you
know how hard I have worked to do all I can to make Arizona a great place to live if you are
indeed a pool player.  Especially a higher rated player.  I am writing this to get a message
across to the few others who continue to bash me for reasons I am sure only they know.

Do they dislike me for being a ten rated player when they can only dream of playing at the
level I play at and the players I play against?  .... Do they dislike me for having the ability to
create and put into motion some of the most popular pool events the state of Arizona has
ever seen? ... Maybe they dislike me for owning the most successful pool bar on the west
side of the Valley if not the most successful pool bar in the entire state. ... Maybe it's because
I started this web site that obviously is becoming more popular each and every day.  Maybe
it's because I get things done. ... And last, but certainly not least, maybe they dislike me
because they are overwhelmingly jealous.  That's what my close friends say anyway.
 I am
constantly reminded that jealously, really is, the most sincere form of flattery.
 My friends
say...  "Be proud of what you've done and are doing."  So, let me take this opportunity to say
thank you to all my detractors.  The more you run your mouth, the more flattered I am!  Thank
you.

Even though the bad mouthing continues on a daily basis, and never, and I mean never,
directly to my face, I have learned quite rapidly to let the bashing roll right off my back.  I know
what I have accomplished in the years I have been in Arizona in regards to pool.  Most of the
players do as well.  I have learned to ignore the bashing and sometimes even find some of
the things they say rather humorous.  However, there is one subject that does seem to get
my goat a little and I am going to address it right now.  Just to set the record straight, so to
speak.  I realize of course that after I set the record straight on this one particular subject, they
will find something else to bad mouth me about.  But, that's ok.  Maybe I will feel just a little bit
more flattered when they do.

The following press release was written by me and appeared in the May, 2005 issue, of The
Arizona Billiards News.
In June of 2003, Alexander’s hosted the First Annual Arizona State Bar Box 9-Ball
Championships.  On February 21st, 2004, Alexander’s hosted the Second Annual Arizona
State Bar Box 9-Ball Championships. The Third Annual Arizona State Bar Box 9-Ball
Championships were tentatively scheduled for February 2005, at Alexander’s, but
postponed.  Our decision to postpone or maybe even cancel the Third Annual Arizona State
Bar Box 9-Ball Championships was based on information delivered to the pool playing
public in the November 2004 thru January 2005 issues of at least one of the local billiard
publications. This information, contained in different press releases and or “Open Letters”,
maintained that a
recently formed “association” had acquired the trade name rights to
our Arizona State Bar Box 9-Ball Championships and numerous other pool tournaments
if billed as Arizona State Championships.
Considering that by the off chance this
information was correct, we temporarily postponed the event.

At the urging of a few respected and well known pool players here in the Valley, we decided
to contact the Trade Name Division of the Arizona Secretary Of State to verify, if indeed, the
information referred to above was accurate. Based on what we learned, we consulted an
attorney who specializes in trade names/trademarks. After following his advice and direction
we are pleased to convey that the agent/owner for the trade name (Arizona State Bar Box 9-
Ball Championships) is Ron Merseal, owner of Alexander’s Sports Bar. This extremely
successful tournament will continue to be held annually, where it originated, where it was
born ... at Alexander’s Sports Bar.  Plans for the 2005 edition of this tournament are currently
underway.  It is also important to note that Ron Merseal is also the agent/owner of (Arizona
State Bar Box 10-Ball Championships), (Arizona State Seniors 9-Ball Championships), and
(Arizona State One Pocket Championships) trade names.

The Trade Name Certification certificates signifying Ron Merseal as agent/owner for the four
trade names referred to above, issued by the office of the Arizona Secretary of State, are
displayed at Alexander’s Sports Bar for confirmation.  Further confirmation can be obtained
at www.azsos.gov.  Please refrain from using any of the four trade names, referred to above
in this press release, without permission.  Also, please consider this press release formal
written public notice that Ron Merseal is the agent/owner of the four trade names referred to
above and as agent/owner of those trade names, insists any use of those trade names
must immediately cease.

Because we worked so diligently since April of 2003 creating and running the Arizona State
Bar Box 9-Ball Championships,
not to mention the effort and expense associated with
retaining this tournament, we decided it was in our best interest to protect our efforts in
the future.
Therefore, we have recently applied with the Arizona Secretary Of State for
registration of the following trade names. (Arizona State 9-Ball Championships Pool
Tournament), (Arizona State 10-Ball Championships Pool Tournament), (Arizona State Bar
Box 7- Ball Championships Pool Tournament), (Arizona State 7-Ball Championships Pool
Tournament), (Arizona State 8-Ball Championships Pool Tournament), (Phoenix Bar Box 9-
Ball Open Pool Tournament), (Phoenix 9-Ball Open Pool Tournament), (Tucson Bar Box  9-
Ball Open Pool Tournament), (Tucson  9-Ball Open Pool Tournament), and of course the
(North vs South Cactus Cup Event).

Alexander’s Sports Bar is located at 3603 W. Dunlap, Phoenix, Arizona and is the home
room of the current Arizona State Bar Box 9-Ball Champion.  Alexander’s Sports Bar is also
the home of the 2005 AzBCA State Men’s and Women’s Champions as well as the 2005
Cactus Cup Champions.
There are a couple of extremely important pieces to the above press release.  If anyone ever
thought I was going to let someone "take" my tournament away from me without doing
everything I could legally do, to retain my rights to MY OWN tournament, they were obviously
mistaken.  My contacting the office of the Arizona Secretary Of State, contacting an attorney,
and purchasing the trade name rights to my own tournament was nothing more than taking
the necessary steps to retain what was mine.  For those of you brain-deaders that still don't
understand, let me put it another way.  Had someone not tried to "inherit" (for lack of a more
descriptive word) something that was not theirs to begin with, I would not have been forced
to take the steps I took and I would be running my tournaments year after year and going on
my merry way.  I think it is a huge stretch to label me the bad guy on this.  To my detractors I
simply ask ... "What would you have done?  Nothing? "  Then I answer my own question.
You probably would have done nothing.  If you are too ignorant to understand the situation as
it stood, then you are most likely too ignorant to understand that some things are just not
right.  And that "association" was not, in any way shape or form, doing the right thing.  My
actions, as pertains to the entire situation, were actually re-actions, made necessary by
someone doing the wrong thing.

It is my understanding, actually I know for a fact, that the association referred to above, had
two highly respected pool players initially involved in their group.  Both of these players
withdrew their participation with that association and one told me personally that he
withdrew as soon as he realized that the association was more intent on trying to disrupt the
activities at Alexanders and go after me personally, than organizing State tournaments which
was initially announced as their goal.
