AWBT 8th Stop – 8-ball Alexander’s Bar and Grill  -  October 7th and 8th

27 Women came to play at Alexander’s Bar and Grill in this $500 added 8-ball event!

There were upsets happening from the very beginning!  For instance, Holly Sholes, who had won the
last two AWBT Qualifying events on 9 foot tables, was out in 2 games!  In fact, by the 3rd round,
many of the AWBT’s bests were already on the B-side!  Man 8-ball is a fickle game!

Slowly the top 8 emerged and Sunday started with the A-side being Susan Mello against Susan
Williams and Diana Clayton against Melinda Huang.  The B-side line up was Bonnie Plowman against
Sara Miller and Natalie Hostler against Michelle Trevino.

Big congratulations to Sara Miller for 4th finishing in place, Diana Clayton and Michelle Trevino for
5/6th, Bonnie Plowman and Natalie Hostler for 7/8th!

The hot-seat match was between Melinda Huang and Susan Mello. Mello won the lag and quickly
won the first game. The second game was a fluky game in which both women had the case of the
scratches and bobbles. To finish off this weird game, Melinda made a great 4 ball run out, but then
made the 8 and scratched in the corner which put Mello up to a quick 2-0 lead! The next game, Mello
ran the table, but missed the 8 in the side and left Melinda up to the table with all of her 7 balls.
Needless to say, Mello was visibly (and audibly) upset.  Melinda ran all the balls out and won the
game which put her on the board with a one game deficit.  Mello broke the next game and didn’t
make anything.  Melinda capitalized and won that game, which tied the match up 2-2! The next game
Mello made a tough 4 ball run out look easy which won her the game and put her back up 3 to 2.
Mello had a nice five ball run  to win the game which put her on the hill, keeping Melinda  at 2.
Melinda fought back and won the next game making the score. now 4 - 3. Both ladies played
extremely well, but unfortunately only one can triumph. Mello had an easy going run out and won the
match 5 – 3.

Melinda Huang went on to play Susan  Williams for 3rd place as Mello took a short breather sittin’
pretty in the hot-seat. Susan won the lag and  made the first break, but not one ball was sunk.
Melinda took control of the table running all her balls out (making the came look simple) and
pocketing the 8 ball to win the first game then continued to win the second game too’. Susan made a
great comeback winning the next 3 games which set the score at 2 – 3, putting her on the hill. Not
giving up without a fight,  Melinda won the 6th game putting  her on the hill as well. With a great battle
both ladies did a spectacular job and eventually Melinda came out on  top winning the match 5 – 4
and will now continue on  to play the final match against Susan Mello. Congratulations Susan
Williams on placing 3rd

The final match started between Susan Mello and Melinda Huang. Since this was a true double
elimination tournament, Melinda would have to beat Mello 2 sets of a race to 5. The first set started
with Melinda winning the lag. For the first game there were a few clusters of locked up balls. Mello
was able to break them up and have a nice run of all the solids. Unfortunately she missed the pocket
for the 8. Melinda was unable to run her 3 remaining balls out giving Mello a second chance on the 8
making the score 1 – 0. On the second match Mello broke and ran out. The 3rd game was filled with
a bunch of great safeties on Mello’s part. Mello was on her last solid. She was able to pocket it, but
ended up scratching, giving Melinda ball in hand to run out her three stripes and the 8 ball and finally
putting her on the board. With an easy and quick game Melinda won the 4th game leaving both
women tied 2 - 2. Melinda Broke and ran the solid, but when it came down to the 8 she choked. Mello
stepped up to the table and made one of her stripes, missed the pocket on her next ball giving
Melinda a clear 8 ball win with the score now being 3 – 2.

For the 5th game either the ladies had a case of the scratches or unpleasant leaves. Mello was
grudgingly able to win the game tying the score once again. The  6th game Melinda had a nice little
run, unfortunately missed one of the two remaining stripes and giving Mello the chance to run all of
her ball including the 8 ball making the score 4 – 3. The 7th game went back and forth between the
two until Melinda attempted a kick shot and missing her object ball completely.  This gave Mello ball
in hand and a chance to run out. She had a difficult shot on the 8 which ended up missing the pocket,
but stayed close by. Melinda decided to play a safe leaving Mello with another attempt on the 8 ball
and still unable to make it. With only 3 of her stripes left on the table Melinda tried to pocket her
object ball and missed. The cue ball was set up perfectly near the 8 ball and Mello pocketed it in the
corner for the win. The final score was 5 – 3. I think these two ladies definitely gave each other a run
for their money. They both played a beautiful game. Congratulations Melinda for finishing 2nd, Melinda
wants to send out a HI to all her boys in Ventura!  And a BIG HUGE Congratulations to Susan Mello
for winning 1st place and $265 in prize money!

We also held a second chance tournament and congratulations to Kristie Ortega for taking second
and $35 in prize monies and congratulations Holley Sholes for taking first place and $65 in prize
monies!

A BIG HUGE Thank you goes out to Ron, Bull, Jo and Diane and everyone else at Alexander’s!  We
had an awesome weekend!  We LOVE your tables!  We look forward to seeing you all our next
tourney which will be a WPBA Qualifier at Metro Sportz Bar on November 4th and 5th!
