Mitch Ellerman Snaps Off Alexander's Single Elimination Buy Back 9-Ball Tournament
|
On Saturday and Sunday, September 30th and October 1st,
Alexander's Sports Bar held a 9-Ball Tournament formatted with
rules similar to the tournament played at the Derby City Classic
every January. Alexander's tournament called for single
elimination 9-ball race to 9 games, a one-time chance to buy back
into the tournament after your first loss, and a complete re-draw of
all winners and buy backs after each and every round. The entry
fee was $75.00 per player with a buy back fee of $50.00. There
were two side pots offered at $10.00 and $25.00 and Alexander's
added $200.00 to the prize fund. The field was limited to sixteen
players. The sixteen players were Evans Bishop, Tony Confalone,
Ron Merseal, Terry Osborne, Doug Hale, Ray Robles, Ray Shobe,
Ken Gouso, Glenn Bond, Troy Ridder, Eddie Uber, Gus Briseno,
John Hall, Pete Gresh Sr., Pete Gresh Jr., and the eventual
winner, Mitch Ellerman.
The scenarios of the individual match-ups were, to say the least,
very interesting using the re-draw every round format. Under these
rules, a player could meet up with another player, win the match,
have the player that just lost that match buy back in, and then
re-draw to that exact player in the next round. If was also possible
to draw numerous byes if the field of winners and those who
bought back going into any particular round, was an odd number
of players.
Alexander's announced, before the tournament started, play would
continue on Saturday until midnight and all players left in the
tournament would return on Sunday at 2pm. Alexander's also
announced that the tournament would pay (excluding the side
pots) $125.00 to third place then break down the remaining prize
money 70% to 30% for first place and second place. The total prize
fund was not announced till the end because there was no way to
know how many players would take advantage of the buy back
option or even how many would have to use that option. What was
known for sure was that no matter how many returned on Sunday,
only three were going to cash in the tournament.
On Sunday, six players did return. Five of these players, Gus,
Terry, Mitch, Glenn, and Eddie, all returned having already used
their buy back option and were faced with one more loss
eliminating them from the tournament. Only Tony Confalone
returned on Sunday with a buy back option still available.
The first re-draw on Sunday pitted Glenn vs. Eddie with Glenn
advancing. Mitch vs. Gus with Mitch advancing. And Tony vs.
Terry with Tony advancing. The tournament was now down to
three players with Tony still sitting on no losses. The next draw
found Mitch getting the bye and Tony & Glenn matching up. Glenn
won this match forcing Tony to use his buy back and the
tournament now stood with the same three players re-drawing
once again. This time all three players had no buy backs
available. Mitch once again drew the bye and Tony and Glenn
matched up again. This time Tony won the match which
eliminated Glenn and left Glenn with a third place finish. The
finals would be Mitch Ellerman vs. Tony Confalone. Playing Tony
Confalone for a tournament championship is never easy. Playing
Tony at Alexander's, where Tony has experienced so much success
over the years is even harder. However, Mitch was not only up to
the task, he won the final match over Tony decisively. Mitch
captured the tournament Championship 9 games to 3.
Because of the success of this tournament, not to mention the
excitement with the re-draw format, Alexander's will be running
this same exact format tournament sometime in the next few
months. Keep an eye on this web site for that tournament date and
remember, the field will once again be limited to sixteen players.
The first sixteen signed up will get in.
Congratulations to Mitch Ellerman, Tony Confalone, and Glenn
Bond.
