Breaking News #73
The 4th Annual Arizona State Bar Box 9-Ball Championship
was held at Alexander’s Sports Bar in Phoenix on
September 9th and 10th, 2006. The format for this State
Championship was double elimination, race to nine games
of nine ball on both sides of the bracket, no three foul rule,
and winner break. The tournament was non-handicapped
as are all State Championship tournaments. The finals
were a one race final to an extended race of thirteen
games. When asked why he does not handicap his State
Championship tournaments, Alexander’s Ron Merseal
replied, “You cannot handicap a State Championship. If
you did handicap this tournament, and a lower rated player
entered and won, he would have to acknowledge he won
the tournament probably because he got to race to less
games than his opponent. That’s no good and would, in
some ways, take the luster off the win. Non-handicapped
tournaments eliminate that scenario and give us a true
State Champion.”
Chuck Bobbitt, of Visual Impressions, co-sponsored the
tournament by adding one-half of the added money and
also supplying the three trophies for the winner, runner-up,
and third place finisher.
Thirty-two players made up the 2006 field with a list that
read like a who’s who of Arizona’s highest rated pool
players. Play began on Saturday September 9th. Because
of the extremely strong field and first round match-ups
that easily could have been match-ups for the finals,
players that were most definitely capable of winning the
tournament found themselves on the one-loss side after
the first round. The tournament paid eight places, and play
continued on Saturday until the field was reduced to four
players on the winners side and four players on the one-
loss side.
On Sunday, September 10th, the eight players returned for
battle. On the one loss side Glenn Bond defeated Ron
Merseal while Doug Hale defeated Mike Wellman. Ron and
Mike settled for a 7th/8th finish. On the winner side, Scott
Frost defeated Tony Confalone while Eddie Uber defeated
Mike Pankoff. Tony and Mike, two former State
Champions, now found themselves on the one loss side of
the bracket.
Scott defeated Eddie for the hot seat then waited for his
finals opponent. Doug and Glenn defeated Tony and Mike
leaving Tony and Mike with a 5th/6th finish and reducing
the field to only four players. Scott Frost, Eddie Uber, Glenn
Bond, and Doug Hale. Glenn sent Doug packing with his
4th place finish and then Glenn sent Eddie home with a 3rd
finish. The finals were now set with Glenn and Scott
racing to (13) for the 2006 Arizona State Bar Box 9-Ball
Championship.
The finals, between Scott Frost and Glenn Bond started out
close with the players splitting the first six games. Then,
as is the case more times than not, Scott went on one of
his familiar rolls, and before you knew it, was sitting on the
hill with Glenn at five games. The tournament ended a few
minutes later with Scott Frost winning the final match of
the State Championship 13 games to 6.
Congratulations to Glenn Bond on his runner-up finish and
of course to Scott Frost on adding the 2006 Arizona State
Bar-Box 9-Ball Championship to his distinguished resume.
