Twenty-six players entered the 2nd Annual Bob Klimas Memorial
9-Ball Tournament on July 1st, 2006 at Alexander’s Sports Bar.
The tournament format was a race to your handicap (-3), double
elimination event.  The $20.00 entry fee and three side pots set
up a first place payout of $720.00.  A Hammerhead Custom Cue
donated by Ed Scott and www.azcues.com was also at stake for
the winner.
As the chart made its way across, the final four on the winners
side found Tony Confalone playing Pat Dicker and Ron Merseal
playing Eddie Uber.  The two winners of those matches were
Tony and Ron setting up a hot seat match between Alexander’s
House Pro and owner.  Tony won the hot seat match dispatching
Ron to the one-loss side 7-2.  As Tony waited for his finals
opponent, the one loss side came down to Ray Robles, Pat
Dicker, and Ron Merseal.  Ray defeated Pat leaving Pat with a
very respectable fourth place finish.  Ray then lost to Ron in a
very exciting hill/hill match forcing Ray to settle for third.  Ron
advanced to the finals faced with having to beat Tony twice.
The final match, a race to seven games for both players, was
somewhat unique to say the least.  Tony broke five balls in in the
first rack and then shot four ducks for a 1-0 lead.  Tony then broke
and ran a very difficult rack two for a 2-0 lead.  Tony came up
empty on the break in rack three and Ron ran the rack in his first
trip to the table to pull within one game at 2-1.  In rack four, Ron
broke and then shot a 2-9 billiard, hanging the nine ball in the
pocket.  Tony shot in the 2-3-4 and left himself a 5-9 combo for
the rack four win, taking a 3-1 lead.  This is the point at which the
match became a little unusual.  Tony broke game five, nine ball
snap!  (Copy and paste from here folks).  Tony broke game six,
nine ball snap!  Tony broke game seven, nine ball snap! The
score now stood 6-1, putting Tony on the hill.  In rack eight, Tony
broke and finally left the nine ball on the table.  Ron ran the rack to
pull to 6-2.  Ron broke the next rack and snaped the nine!  Ron
broke again and snaped the nine!  The score now stood 6-4 Tony,
with five nine ball snaps taking place in the last six games!  Ron
came up empty on the break in the next game allowing Tony back
to the table.  Huge mistake.  Tony played the final rack just like he
played the entire tournament.  Perfectly.  Tony Confalone is the
2006 Bob Klimas Memorial 9-Ball Champion.
