Ken Gouso and Ron Merseal capture big payday at Alexander's Extreme Scotch Event.
|
Alexander’s Sports Bar held a $100 per team Scotch Doubles 9-Ball tournament on June 3rd/4th, 2006. The
tournament field was limited to (24) teams and was cosponsored by Visual Impressions owner Chuck Bobbitt.
Between the entrys, the $600.00 added money by Alexander’s and Visual Impressions, and the almost 100%
participation in the $10/$20/$40 side pots, the pay-out kitty quickly grew to over $4500.00 including $800.00 in the
winner take all $40.00 side pot. Early sign-up of the 24 teams had the tournament full two weeks before the
tournament was scheduled to play. Twenty-three of the twenty-four early sign-ups were on hand to participate at noon
on Saturday June 3rd. The one team that did not show was quickly replaced by the first team on the waiting list keeping
the tournament full with twenty four extremely strong teams. The teams were limited to a max team rating of (18).
The first place prize of over $2500.00 gave everyone participating an added incentive to capture first place in this event.
After all was said and done on Saturday, six teams returned on Sunday for a shot at the huge first place payout. Four
teams on the one-loss side and two teams on the winners side. The winners side teams were playing for the hot seat
on Sunday while the other four teams were fighting to stay alive on the one-loss side of the bracket.
Mike Pankoff & Justin Adams defeated Ken Gouso & Ron Merseal for the hot seat in a hill/hill match with both teams
racing to 10 games based on the handicapped format of total team handicap minus (8). Troy Ridder & Pete Gresh
defeated Al Bolin & Tyson Cole on the one loss side while Evans Bishop & Russ Baldwin defeated Echo Ledger & Ray
Buss. Al & Tyson and Echo & Ray settled for 5th/6th.
Troy & Pete then defeated Evans & Russ leaving Evans & Russ in 4th place, while Troy & Pete advanced to play Ken &
Ron with a trip to the finals on the line. This match was extremely exciting as Ken & Ron jumped to a huge lead only to
watch as Troy & Pete pulled to within one game. Ken & Ron finally got back to the table to close the match out 10-8 with
both teams racing to 10. This win set up the rematch of the hot seat match only this time Ken & Ron would have to win
not only once, but twice, because of the double elimination format.
Ken & Ron won the first set of the finals by the score of 10-4, then kept the hot seat winners in their seats as Ken & Ron
raced to another huge lead in the second and final set and won that set and the tournament, not to mention $2570.00,
with a 10-5 close out victory.
