Alexander's Sports Bar, the home of the Arizona State Bar Box State Championships, held the 2006 Arizona State Bar
Box 10-Ball Championships on Saturday & Sunday April 8th & 9th, 2006.  This was the second annual edition of this
tournament.  Twenty-nine players made up what some consider to be the strongest Bar-Box State Championship field
ever assembled.  Over one-half of the players in the field were Arizona players rated 10 or above according to the Arizona
Ratings Committee.  The format of the tournament was race to nine games of ten ball, double elimination, with a one
race final to thirteen games.
Dennis Orender won the tournament and earned the 2006 State title with a 13-11 finals
victory over Jimmy Mendoza.
Dennis Orender is Arizona's Newest State Champion.
Orender Tops Extremely Strong Field To Capture Bar-Box 10-Ball Title At Alexander's
The road to the Championship was not easy.  Dennis started the
tournament with a bye in the first round then a hard fought victory over
Pete Gresh Sr.  Dennis then made his way to the hot seat with wins
over Jack Rippel, Justin Whitehead, and Jimmy Mendoza.

Jimmy got to the Championship match with wins over Chris Adams,
Tres Kane, Mike Pankoff, and Scott Frost before losing to Dennis for
the hot seat, then defeating Scott for the second time, to advance to
the final match.

Just how strong a field do you have to have to keep the likes of Terry
Osborne, Glenn Bond, Mike Pankoff, Tres Kane, Pete Gresh, Doug
Hale, Tony Confalone, Babe Thompson, and Evans Bishop, out of the
cash and out of the tournament before the second day of play?
The final match was quite a match to say the least.  Dennis never trailed and Jimmy was never more than two games
behind.  The match was tied numerous times.  Until the final game, Jimmy continued to fight his way back while Dennis
continued to take the lead every time Jimmy tied it.  The final score of Dennis 13 and Jimmy 11, matched the biggest
lead Dennis held throughout the match.  The two finalist, both of whom play on the same BCA league team out of
Alexander's, displayed the utmost respect for each other, before, during, and after the match, while at the same time
playing their hearts out in an effort to become Arizona's newest State Champion.  Congratulations to Dennis Orender
on his win.

Scott Frost finished third and Justin Whitehead finished fourth.  Gus Briseno and Mike O'Hara finished 5th/6th while
Mike Couvrette and Jack Rippel finished 7th/8th.

The next Bar Box State Championship tournament for 2006 will be played on September 9th & 10th at Alexanders.  This
tournament will be the 4th Annual Arizona State Bar-Box 9-Ball tournament.  The three former State Bar-Box 9-Ball
Champions, Evans Bishop, Tony Confalone, and Mike Pankoff have all verbally committed to play.
