Mendoza Dusts The Field At Alexander's 1st Annual 10-Ball Desert Dust-off
Alexander's Sports Bar held their 1st Annual Desert Dust-Off 10-Ball tournament over the weekend of February 17th-19th.
The thirty-nine player field might as well been named the who's who of Arizona pool.  Almost every currently active high
rated player was there except for a few that were competing in the IPT tournament in California held the same weekend.

In a effort to keep the entire field from having to make their way to Alexander's on a Saturday morning only to wait half the
day to play their first match, Alexander's did the final sign-ups and first round matches on Friday night allowing the players
the opportunity to sleep in on Saturday and arrive in time to play their Saturday pre-scheduled matches.  The field was so
strong that Doug Hale, the current Arizona State All-Around point leader, was unable to get past the third round!  The prize
money, for the tournament, was made up of entries, side pots, and added money with first place paying over $2300.00 and
second place an even $1000.00.

After play concluded on Saturday night, eight players remained to return on Sunday at 1pm.  Four on the one-loss side and
four on the winner side of the bracket.  The four players on the one-loss side were Mike Pankoff matched up with Justin
Whitehead and Glenn Bond matched against Eric Young.  The four still on the winners side found Jimmy Mendoza playing
Bobby Ast and Pete Gresh playing Terry Osbourne.

Pankoff and Young both lost leaving them with a 7th/8th finish.  Mendoza and Osborne both won setting up an extremely
interesting hot seat match.  Whitehead then defeated Ast while Gresh continued his upset streak with a win over Bond.
Bond and Ast finished 5th/6th.

While Whitehead and Gresh battled it out on the one-loss side, Osborne and Mendoza played for the hot seat.  Gresh
stayed in up-set form and defeated Whitehead forcing Justin to settle for 4th place.  As that match neared the end,
Osborne won and sent Mendoza to the one loss side by winning the hot seat match (9-7).

With the tournament down to three players, (Pete Gresh, Jimmy Mendoza, & Terry Osborne) and a difference of over
$1300.00 between second and first place, things began to get a little interesting.

Jimmy ended Pete's fantastic run with a victory in the one-loss side finals leaving Pete with a more than respectable 3rd
place finish.  Jimmy's win in the match got him a spot in the finals against Terry.  The finals would be a one race to (13)
final.

With the score tied at 4-4 in the finals, Terry scratched and Jimmy won that game then preceded to break and run the next
four racks to take a commanding lead.  Terry played brilliantly the rest of the match, but so did Jimmy, allowing Jimmy to
maintain his lead and capture the championship by the score of 13-8.

Alexander's will host the 2nd Annual Arizona 10-Ball Desert Dust-off in February of 2007.  All Arizona Desert Dust Off's are
co-sponsored by Chuck Bobbitt of Visual Impressions.
