6 & Under at Sweet Tooth Billiards
A field of 16 showed up to compete in the 6 & under tournament at Sweet Tooth Billiards on Sunday, July 26th. It was nice to see these players come out for this event and Sweet Tooth will be offering more of these types of events in the future.
The pick of the litter in the calcutta was a player that was fairly new to tournament play in the Valley. Mike McCune had been playing recently in tournaments as a 5 rated player and was cashing. When he arrived at this event he was informed that he would be allowed to play, but as a 6 rated player in the interest of fairness to the other players in the field. He seemed upset but reluctantly agreed. This did not prove to be a problem for this player as he soon went out and won his first 3 matches by a combined score of 18 to 1! Soon he had the hot seat and waited to see who he would face in the finals.
His hot seat opponent Steve Feld went over to the 1 loss side and lost to eventual winner Tom Farr who was making a nice run through the loser's side. Tom then took on the hot seat champion and double dipped his friend Mike who suddenly was unable to run more than 2 balls at any time. Finals pressure? Maybe something else but this was not the same player! Owners of his calcutta were sorely disappointed in this lapse in ability, but the result still ended up with Tom Farr winning, Mike McCune in 2nd and Steve Feld taking down 3rd.
Mr. McCune was asked not to return to Sweet Tooth for the remainder of his visit to our state. It was unfortunate that a nice event like this one had to be marred by controversy, but Sweet Tooth will continue to try to offer high quality events and still protect the players of the Valley in the future.
