Breaking News #245
By Skip Maloney:
www.insidepoolmag.com Gus Bresino
completed an undefeated weekend with two victories over Bernie Pettipiece to
capture first place in the Desert Classic Tour’s 14.1 tournament on the weekend
of April 4-5. The $1,000-added straight pool event drew 31 participants to
Pockets Billiards in Tucson, AZ.
Bresino and Pettipiece first met in the hot seat match after Bresino had defeated Andy Kachur 100-24 and Pettipiece had sent Susan Williams west 100-27. Bresino continued to dominate, repeating his 100-24 performance against Kachur with a win over Pettipiece that left him in the hot seat.
Peter Lhotka, after victories over Jeff Webb and Babe Towsend, was waiting for Kachur. Mike Pankof got by Jimmy Mendoza and Tres Kane for the right to meet Williams. Lhotka and Pankoff dropped Kachur and Williams into the tie for fifth place and then squared off against each other in the quarterfinals. Pankoff downed Lhotka 100-54 and then ran into a determined Pettipiece, who defeated him by the same 100-54 score.
Though Pettipiece was able to double the number of balls he’d sunk in the hot seat match, it wasn’t enough to hold off Bresino in the extended race to 125 balls in the finals. Bresino completed his undefeated weekend with a 125-48 win over Pettipiece, and in addition to his first place prize, he earned an extra $100 from Breakball Promotions for recording the weekend’s longest run. Bresino’s run of 71 balls won the prize by a single ball over Jimmy Mendoza.
