Breaking News #225
Back on the one-lose side, Jimmy continued on with knocking off Pancake, while Mitch was busy knocking off Bobby Emmons. Both finished in 7th/8th and took home $75. Finishing in 5th/6th was Jimmy and Ronn Rutan, with Chuck
Evans beating Jimmy 8 - 6 and Mitch dominating Ronn 8 - 1. Jimmy took home $210 with some side pot money and
Ronn $150 for his efforts.
Over in the hot seat match, Gus continued his strong play as he secured the hot seat with a 8 - 5 victory over Bobby.
And in the 4th place match Chuck Evans showed why he's one of the top players in the state. He jumped out to a 6 -
4 lead over Mitch but couldn't find anymore opportunities at the table as Mitch won the final 4 games in quick fashion
to send Chuck home with $250.
Mitch then was able to get his revenge on Bobby, but it wouldn't come without some drama. He jumped out to an
early 3 - 0 lead, but an unlikely miss let Bobby back in. At 5 - 3, Mitch looked to push the game out of reach, but
missed another key shot to get the score to 5 - 4. He was able to get to the hill first at 7 - 5, but the match was far
from over. Bobby ran out, and then capitalized on another mistake by the 2008 US Bar Table Champion to tie it up at
hill-hill and with Bobby's turn to break. He broke them wide open and made a ball. The match looked all but over until
the nerves set in and Bobby missed a back cut. Mitch stepped to the table with some work to be done. He snapped
off a few routine shots and left an angle to be able to run into the 8-ball, moving it down the rail a tiny bit. But this left
him almost straight in on his final ball. He chalked up and slammed the ball in the corner, following with a bit of inside
to come 2-rails and stop in a 1 foot window for the game. Congrat's to Bobby for a great tournament and his 3rd
place money of $375.
In the finals, we had the 2 hottest players of the weekend, Gus Briseno and Mitch Ellerman. And like all Desert
Classic Tour events, there would be an extended race one-set finals. Race to 10 for the title and $1125 first prize.
Gus jumped out of the gates first with the first game, and Mitch answered right back. In the 3rd game is when things
started to fall apart for Gus. He missed a fairly simple shot and allowed Mitch to run out. The 4th game was the same
story and in a blink of an eye Mitch was up 3 - 1. Gus was steaming and let his emotions get the best of him as he
fired balls in at 100 mph and slammed his cue down on table 15 a few times after missing. Mitch cruised through a
few more racks and was sitting pretty at 8 - 2. Gus put together a really tough rack in game 11 and dropped dead
straight on a short 2 foot 8 ball. He fired it at Mock 10 and it came back out. Mitch ran the rack down and Gus threw
in the towel conceding the final game.
The inaugural season of the
Desert Classic Tour has come to
an end. The 9th and final stop
concluded this past weekend with
some fantastic 8-ball on the big
tables. This final event was held
at Bullshooters in Phoenix, AZ,
which has quickly become one of
the premier pool rooms in the
entire state. Boasting over 40
tables, numerous dart boards,
flat screens all over the place, a
giant covered smoking patio
(which even has a pool table), a
giant kitchen and much more.
And as an added bonus
Bullshooters had the Oscar De
La Hoya vs Manny Pacquiao fight
on a giant screen for all to see
for free.

One of the remaining players to return on Sunday was
Sara Miller. Sara started off on Saturday by knocking
off one tough opponent after another to get 3 deep on
the winners side before being knocked to the other
side of the board.
Mitch "The Wonderboy" Ellerman was running his
normal speed,
Bhut Jolokia Pepper hot, through his
first couple of matches. But then he ran into the ever
so cheerful
Bobby Barreras, aka "Hawaiian Bobby".
Bobby played flawless pool the entire day on Saturday
to get to the Hot Seat match.
Returning on Sunday we had 4 players on the winners
side of the board. Bobby vs
Ronn Rutan and
Chuck
Evans vs
Gus Briseno. And on the 1 lose side were
Jimmy Mendoza vs
Dennis Orender, Bobby
Emmons vs
Bret Huth, Sara Miller vs
Mitch
Ellerman, and
George Teyechea vs
Mike Pankoff.
Jimmy didn't miss a ball against Dennis to take a
dominating 8 - 1 victory. Bobby Emmons battled hard
early but pulled away for a quick victory. George lost a
heartbreak to Mike "Pancake" Pankoff. George led
most of the way and was leading 6 - 4 at one point in
the race to 8. Mike tied it up after a careless miss by
George and proceeded to run out the set for the 8 - 6
victory. Sara's run had come to an end as Mitch was
starting his pepper run for the day.
In the semi-finals of the winners side, Bobby jumped
out to an early lead against Ronn, but couldn't close it
out. A few exchanges of shots, and Ronn was right
back in it at 6 - 5. Bobby got the hill first, and then
capitalized on a miss from Ronn to take his spot in the
hot seat match. On the bottom half of the board, Gus
Briseno was a man on a mission. He had a dominating
display against one of the toughest tournament players
in the state, Chuck Evans to join Bobby.

Over on the pool side of things, there were some punches being thrown as well. With several big guns running into

were down to 12 of the 36 starting players.
