Breaking News #215
Scott Frost is 2008 AZ 1-Pocket Champ
|
10/19/08 - This past weekend was the 7th
Stop on the Desert Classic Tour's 2008
Inaugural season. Tour Operator's Jimmy
Mendoza and Dennis Orender have put
together an extremely diverse tour. With
five different games being played on both
barbox and 9' tables. 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball,
14.1 and this time 1-Pocket.
The tournament was held at Kolby's in
Tempe, Arizona. 46 players came out to
compete in this event, which was also the
Arizona State 1-Pocket Championship.
Many Arizona residents came out to
compete for the title as well as a few players
from neighboring states and the competition
was fierce. After the first day of action
completed there were 8 players left on the
winners side and 4 on the losers side for a
total of 12 players on Sunday.
Winners Side final 8 were: Bernie
Pettipiece vs Gus Briseno (Gus won),
George Teyechea vs Greg Rosenheck
(Greg won), Scott Frost vs Preacher Ron
(Scott won), Tom Neil vs Tres Kane (Tom
won). On the losers side were Jeff
Thomas, Martin Bick, Glenn Bond and
Leil Gay. Leil lost early on Saturday and
won 6 straight matches to get back to 3rd
place.
Martin Bick showed some real talent, by
fighting his way through tough opponent
after tough opponent. And Greg Rosenheck from Los Angeles brought his A game as well. After Tom got knocked to the 1
lose side it set up a battle with Leil Gay. Each player battled back in forth and tied it up at hill-hill. But in the end Leil took
advantage of one mistake and closed out the match. Congrat's to Tom Neil of Tuscon for his 5th/6th finish, along with Preacher
Ron Rutan. Preacher Ron runs a monthly 1 pocket tournament at the end of every month at Kolby's.
The hot seat match was set to be played on the TV table. Lenny from
OnTheRailTV.com was on hand to stream the entire event. You can check
out some of the saved video's on his website. Including the finals.
If you have ever watched a 1-pocket tournament before you will find that
it is usually a marathon more than a sprint. But you wouldn't of known it
by watching Scott "The Freezer" Frost play against his long time friend
Gus Briseno. Both players took aggressive stances and traded shots that I
hadn't seen all tournament long. In the end Scott's experience shined
through as he took the hot seat match.
On the other side of the board Leil Gay was tied up with Greg Rosenheck.
This was a very interesting match as they both seemed to wear down a
little after 2 days of strong competition. Leil sent Greg packing for L.A.
and set up a match with Gus. Gus showed why he made it to the hot seat
match by overcoming some early key misses to close out the 1997 US
Open Champion. Leil took home $400 for his 3rd place finish.
In the finals we saw a rematch of the Hot Seat match, but it was Gus who
looked like the seasoned pro early. Gus got out on the 1st two racks to
take the 2 - 0 lead with the break. Gus made a nice break and Scott started
the rack with a 3 rail safe to lock Gus up in the corner. After only 2 or 3
shots Scott took control of rack 3 to get on the board down 2 - 1.
In Rack 4, Scott made a ball on the break and ran 7 out to get to 2 - 2.
They both traded some great position shots, but Scott was able to freeze
Gus up on the 2 ball leaving him no choice but to bank the 6 and hope it
went in off of a cluster. It didn't go. Scott proceeded to run 4 and lock
Gus up again. He picked off 2 more and played safe again. Gus was able
to make a long bank and knocked in a few more, but in the end Scott was
able to frustrate Gus and get his last 2 balls to take a 3 - 2 lead.
Scott took the next rack as well to make it 4 in a row. In rack 7 in this
race to 5 finals, Scott appeared to be in the zone as he continually
one-stroked various different shots into his hole. Sitting at ball count of 5 -
2, they both played great safes back and forth until Scott picked a ball off
the end rail with a crazy short 2 rail kick and all the way across table into
his hole. Gus tried to bank the 1 into a combo only to sell out the rack and
give Scott the win and the 2008 Arizona State 1-Pocket Championship.
Congrat's to Gus Briseno for his 2nd place finish and $740.
AZPoolScene.com would like to thank all the players for coming out to
Kolby's for this spectacular event. If you haven't been to Kolby's yet, the
team over there runs a great pool room and really does a tremendous job of
supporting the Arizona Pool Scene. Join the Desert Classic Tour at the
final tour stop, before the year-end event, at Pockets in Tucson for big
table 10-ball. If you have only played in one event this tour, you must play
this final event to qualify for the finale.
Congratulations to Carlos Avalos and Lenny Marshall for coming in 1st
and 2nd in the 8 & Under side pot.
