Mitch "Wonderboy" Ellerman snaps off the DCT Stop #5 at Bullshooters
|

The 5th stop of the Desert Classic Tour was played this past weekend
at Bullshooters in Phoenix. The original location was moved and
recently opened Bullshooters did an outstanding job of hosting the
tour event. It is located at 35th Ave & Peoria in Phoenix, the old Six
Shooters. And WOW have they done a fantastic job converting this
place into the nicest and largest billiards hall in the area.
43 players showed up to compete for the Big Table 9 - Ball tournament.
Chuck Evans and Mitch Ellerman played their way to the Hot-Seat
while other top players from around the state were all vying for spots in
the money. At the end of Saturday's play 12 players were set to
return on Sunday, all of which were guaranteed in the money.
A great thing about the Desert Classic Tour, is that they cater to the
lower ranked players by offering an 8 & Under Side pot for the highest
finishing player rating an Arizona 8 and lower. In this tourney two
players tied to split the side pot. Carlos Avalos and Jude both played
some tough matches to earn a share of the side pot.
George Teyechea found himself in a tough battle with Gus Briseno
with the loser taking 5th/6th. The two went back in forth, tied at 4, tied
at 5 and again at 6 - 6, but Gus strung together a few racks late to get on the hill first. Congrat's to George for his
strong finish after his 9 - 7 defeat. Gus awaited his challenger in the next round and it turned out to be one of the
organizers of the event Dennis Orender. Dennis and Gus played a nail biter and ended up hill-hill. On the case
game they traded safes and position play back in forth. Dennis was left with a really tough shot on the 6 ball. He
bared down and fired on it but it just didn't find a pocket, leaving Gus a 4 ball out for the win. Congrat's to Dennis
for another strong finish in the Desert Classic Tour.
For the Hot Seat we find the tale of two styles as young gun Mitch Ellerman matched up with old school Chuck
Evans. Mitch's style is fast and powerful where Chuck is more slow and calculated. Mitch rattled off the first few
racks while Chuck "The Mailman" Evans picked away at a few games of his own. After a short match, Mitch was able
to pull away to continue his undefeated tournament and sit upon the hot seat thrown.
Awaiting Chuck on the 1 lose side was Gus Briseno. The two played a very exciting match back in forth for the
chance to upset the kid. They traded leads throughout the match but in the end Chuck was able to edge Gus out.
Congrat's to Gus with his 3rd place finish.
The finals, as is with all Desert Classic Tour events is a One Set Race to 13 games. Chuck "The Mailman" Evans
verses Mitch "The Wonderboy" Ellerman. Chuck wins the coin toss and breaks the first rack "Dry". Mitch showed
that he was definitely here to win as he ran off the first two racks to take an early lead. Chuck got his first game at 3
- 1, before Mitch got down to business. He used his fast style and superior ball making skills to run off the next 8
games before Chuck could get on the board again to make it 11 - 2. At 12 - 3 Mitch missed his first ball on the
match. Leaving an incredible hill to climb for The Mailman. Chuck did not seem rattled at all at this point as he
worked his way through a few racks, played a few safety games and got the game back to 12 - 7. In game 20
though, Chuck worked his way through the rack only to just get on the wrong side of the 7 ball in the side pocket.
Without much angle at all, he drilled the ball into the side and tried to move whitey around the table 3 rails. The
tables that were just re-done in previous weeks didn't allow the ball to make it all the way to the bottom rail for the 8.
Chuck quickly decided between banking it back or trying the extreme cut in the corner. He elected the cut shot and
came up short. He tapped the cue ball to concede the victory to Mitch Ellerman. With that win Mitch will be the new
leader in the Desert Classic Tour's Overall Leaderboard.
At the end of the season the top 8 players in the standings will be seeded in the final tournament. With over $6000
of added money already in the pot, the finals will definitely be the event to attend. Because of Alexander's closing
it's doors earlier this year the final location is still up in the air. Stay tuned to AZPoolScene.com and

I want to thank Bullshooters for hosting what I can only imagine is the first of many great events. The upgrades
throughout the building were great to enjoy and the staff very helpful and polite. If you haven't had the change to
stop in yet, I highly recommend doing so. There are Pool Leagues and Dart Leagues forming soon.
