| Jimmy Mendoza takes Stop 4 on the Desert Classic Tour |
Thirty Eight players came out to Metro Sports Bar
in Phoenix, AZ this weekend to compete in the
Desert Classic Tours 4th Stop. This time the
discipline was 9-ball Bar Box. After a tough first
day of competition 12 players remained to return
on Sunday and be in the money. David Wiseman
and Jimmy Mendoza distinguished the remaining
winners side players to setup the hot seat match.
On the losers side Scott Frost and Mitch Ellerman
were fighting to get back to the winners side of
the board. In an epic 31 minute match Mitch beat
Scott 9-4 to advance to the 3rd place Match.
Mitch would then wait for the winner of the hot
seat match.
In the Hot Seat Match, Jimmy looked like a
possessed man, as he made quick work of many
racks and cruised to victory. David Wiseman then
jumped over to the Losers Side to face a hungry
Mitch Ellerman. David played well, but Mitch's
quick run outs were just too much for him which
left David with an impressive 3rd place finish.
One of the best features of this Tour is the fact
that people at home can watch the key matches
through OnTheRailTV.com. Lenny has put
together some great streams in the past and this
tournament did not disappoint. With numerous
characters in the box doing commentating
through out the event, it left viewers from across
the country a way to see the level of play in
Arizona.
In the finals match, Jimmy and Mitch would play a 1 set race to 13 to
determine this leg's champion. From the opening break it looked like
Mitch was going to be unstoppable. He jumped out to a 3-1 lead
within 10 minutes and then quickly got up to 5-3. Scott Frost was
commentating with Dennis Oreander for this match. Scott exclaimed
that if Jimmy got it back to 5-5 his money was on Mendoza. And in a
few minutes later, Jimmy meticulously worked his way through a few
racks to tie it up. But he wasn't done there. He played perfect
through many more racks and when Mitch had a chance at the table it
was to kick at a cleverly played safety by Jimmy. At the end of his
extremely impressive run over the 2008 US Bar Table 8-ball Champion,
he was ahead 10 - 5.
In rack 16, Jimmy again played a safety, only to watch Mitch one rail
and pluck the 2 ball into the side pocket and come around for shape.
Mitch put this rack together and 2 more before missing a pretty
routine shot early in rack 18. Jimmy pushed the score to 11-8, only
needing 2 more. Mitch seemed to be rattled after spending so much
time in his chair, as he missed another ball and watching Jimmy run 5
balls to get to the hill. Jimmy broke and played a push shot that ran
long. Mitch punched the 2 in the side pocket at a tight angle and
quickly ran through a tough rack to get to 12-9. Mitch had a great
break on the next rack and was starting put together a little run to get
back to 12-10. But this weekend belonged to Jimmy as he made short
work of the next rack to win the 4th Tour Stop on the Desert Classic
Tour.
The 5th Tour Stop will be held August 23rd and 24th, 2008 at
BullShooters in Phoenix. This is the old Six Shooters on 35th Ave. and
Peoria. This event promises to be an instant classic. The discipline
will be Big Table 9 - ball with $1000 added from BullShooters and the
