Breaking News #195
Susan Williams would not be denied
with such a strong field of players
looking for their share of the $5000
in prize money at the first annual
Western Women's Amateur Open
held at the Mazatzal Casino in
Payson, Az.
Williams was just one of the top
seeds in this event, that also saw
strong play from Heather Lloyd,
Susan Mello, Hillary Morse, Samm
Diep, Kathleen Lawless, Bernie Store
and Leandra Gaff.
Williams drew one of the many first
Round Byes, before trouncing on
another AZ local girl Leandra Gaff
with a 9-0 score. Leandra had
defeated Sara Miller 9-1 in the 1st
round. Susan continued playing extremely strong with a 9-7 win over Emily Wilmoth. She then faced
a very tough competitor in Bernie Store and came out on top with a 9-7 victory with a trip to the hot
seat match.
Bernie Store scored wins over Phyllis Romo, Marcy Thomas and Heather Lloyd before losing to
Susan. On the one loss side she took down Sue Lance with a score of 9-6, while Heather Lloyd was
busy working her way back into it with impressive wins over Bonnie Plowman, Emily Wilmoth and
Sunny Griffin setting up a rematch with Store. This time Heather came out on top leaving Bernie
with an impressive 4th place finish with a 9-6 score.
Meanwhile, Grace Nakamura was making quick work of the bottom half of the bracket with wins over
another AZ local Kat Lawless 9-5, Samm Diep 9-4, Terri Johnson McCauley 9-8, and Sunny Griffin in
another hill-hill thriller to face Susan.
The match for the hot-seat went to hill-hill before Williams defeated Grace Nakamura.
On the one loss side, Nakamura eliminated Heather Lloyd to earn another shot at Williams in the
finals.
After Williams' hill-hill win over Nakamura for the hot-seat, it was only fitting that Nakamura defeat
Williams hill-hill in the first set of the finals. Williams would not allow the second set to stay close, as
she cruised to a 9-3 victory and the tournament win.
Grace battled with some very strong matches, having 4 of her 8 matches go to Hill-Hill.
