Scott Frost Wins Arizona Desert Classic Tour First Stop
|
The 2008 Arizona Desert Classic Tour got off to a roaring
start on March 15th & 16th. The first leg of this new tour
was held at Alexander's Sports Bar and was a 10-Ball
event played on 7' Diamond Smart Tables. Scott Frost
won the tournament when he defeated Jimmy Mendoza
in the finals. Mitch Ellerman finished third and Dave
Hemmah finished fourth. The tour directors are Dennis
Orender and Jimmy Mendoza and the tour is title
sponsored by Chuck Bobbitt of Visual Impressions.
Play started on Saturday, March 15th with fifty-seven
players from Arizona, California, Colorado, and New
Mexico. Saturday's play continued until the field was
reduced to sixteen, all of which would be in the cash
when they returned on Sunday. Returning on Sunday
with one loss were Mike Pankoff, Chris Paradowski, Dave
Wiseman, Brian Begay, Mike Sandoval, Ben Hrabina,
Chuck Evans, and Adam King. Returning on Sunday with
no losses were Jimmy Mendoza, Bobby Ast, Scott Frost,
Dennis Orender, Dave Hemmah, Pete Lhotka, Mike
Williams, and Mitch Ellerman.
As Sunday's play moved along, the final two on the
winners side and the two playing for the hot seat were
Scott Frost and Mitch Ellerman. Scott defeated Mitch to
gain the hot seat and send Mitch to the one-loss side.
The players still alive on the one-loss side at this time
were Mike Pankoff, Jimmy Mendoza, Bobby Ast, and Dave
Hemmah. Mendoza then defeated Pankoff and Hemmah
defeated Ast leaving Pankoff and Ast tied for 5th/6th.
The next match-up pitted old friends Mendoza and
Hemmah against each other. Mendoza defeated
Hemmah in a hill/hill match forcing Dave Hemmah to
settle for a fourth place finish. Mendoza and Ellerman
then played with the loser getting third place while the
winner advanced to the finals against Frost. Ellerman
jumped out to a quick lead only to watch Mendoza fight
back and win the set forcing Ellerman to settle for third.
The finals were set with Mendoza facing Frost for the
championship. The final match was an extended race to
(13) and was a one race final. Frost jumped out to the
lead but Mendoza fought back again and pulled to with-in
one game at 8-7. Frost, however, was not to be denied.
Frost closed the match out with his never ending
brilliant play and won the match and tournament with a
13-9 finals win. Mendoza settled for second.
The eight and under player finishing highest and winning
the eight and under side pot was Al Terpstra. Along with
