November 10th & 11th, 2007 were the dates and
Alexander's Sports Bar was the location for the most
recent Arizona State Championship pool tournament.
The 2007, 3rd Annual, Arizona State Bar Box 10-Ball
Championship was co-sponsored by Chuck Bobbitt of
Visual Impressions and was $1000.00 added. The race
was to nine games on both sides of the bracket.
The tournament started on Saturday and was played
down to eight players, all in the cash, to return on
Sunday. The eight players returning on Sunday were,
Tyson Cole, Scott Frost, Mike Pankoff, Ben Hrabina,
Bobby Barreras, Bobby Emmons, Chuck Evans, and the
eventual champion........ Mitch Ellerman. Last years
champion, Dennis Orender, had a terrible Saturday as he
went two and out and then hung around long enough to
watch his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes lose their first
game of the season and their number one ranking in the
college football standings. Everyone has bad days and
unfortunately for the defending champion, this was his.
Halfway through Sunday, the hot seat match was played between Mitch
Ellerman and Scott Frost with Scott taking the hot seat and a place in
the one race to (13) finals, when Scott defeated Mitch 9-5.
Tyson Cole was over on the one loss side eliminating player after
player as he made his way to the third place match against Mitch.
Mitch then ended Tyson's run, forcing Tyson to settle for third place.
Mitch's win over Tyson got him in the finals against Scott. Tyson, who
had lost his very first match of the tournament to Mitch, got to third
place with wins over Nick Deleon, Ron Merseal, Brad Johnson, Bobby
Emmons, Chuck Evans, and Mike Pankoff, before losing to Mitch again
and settling for third place.
In the finals, Scott jumped out to a big lead and appeared to be on his
way to another state championship win. Mitch however, had other
plans as to how this championship match would wash out. As Scott
joked with the crowd, Mitch stayed focused and made his move to tie
the match at 8-8 in the race to (13). Scott won game number (21) to
take an 11-10 lead but Mitch won the last three games to capture the
win and the title of the 2007 Arizona State Bar Box 10-Ball Champion.
Scotts road through the tournament was wins over Chuck Parrill, Nick
Deleon, Bobby Barreras, Chuck Evans, his hot seat win over Mitch,
and his loss in the finals to Mitch. Mitch's road was wins over Tyson
Cole, Rudy Alameda, Bobby Emmons, Ben Hrabina, his loss to Scott for
the hot seat, then wins over Tyson in the loser side final, and his win
over Scott in the finals.
