Three State Tourneys Held In Four Days  ~  A Huge Success At Main Street Tucson
Tucson Arizona's Main Street Billiards held
it's annual State Championship Week on
October 25th thru the 28th, 2007.  These
State Tournaments, which date back to 1981,
are considered among the most prestigious
events held annually across the state.
Three separate state tournaments in four
days. Here's what went down......
Thursday, October 25th
Eight Ball was the first event of the week, and defending champion George
Teyechea let everyone know he wanted to make it two in a row as he shot his way
into the hot seat and a spot in Sundays finals.  Arizona's hottest young gun, Mitch
Ellerman, after an early loss to George, worked his way through the one loss side
to also earn a berth in Sundays final.  Rounding out the final four via some
outstanding play were Dennis Orender and Rudy Alameda.
Friday, October 26th
Ten Ball was the game of the day, and Mitch Ellerman earned his second state
finals seat, this time undefeated.  Muaz Arshad, after losing the hot seat match to
Mitch, overcame Tres Kane in the Semis to earn another shot at young Ellerman in
Sundays finals.
Saturday, October 27th
At the start of the 9-Ball division of Championship Week, the question was can
Ellerman get to the finals in all three events?  What role was Scott "The Freezer"
Frost going to play in Mitch's run to perfection?  As both player's made it to the
elite eight, returning on Sunday for the 9-Ball event, we all had to simply wait and
see.
Sunday, October 28th
The final day kicked off with Mitch outrunning Tom Neil, and then Scott over
powering Dave Capone, to set up a highly anticipated hot-seat match for the
9-Ball
event
.  Mitch then set history becoming the first player ever to make it to the
finals in all three events when he bested the Freezer 10-5 for the hot seat.
Meanwhile, Dave Capone, worked his way to the semis only to catch a highly
motivated Scott Frost, who internally demanded another shot at Mitch in the finals.
Scott won over Dave, 7-2.
The stage was set for the finals, a one race final to eleven games.  Young gun
Ellerman jumped off to an early lead, but Mr. Frost patiently bided his time
awaiting his opportunity and when it did arrive he took full advantage winning this
years State 9-Ball title, 11-7.
Ten Ball
Another finals for Mitch Ellerman, who happened to be the ten ball defending
champion.  This years opponent was Muaz Arshad, who obviously played very well
to get to the finals.  Muaz had a little trouble getting untracked and fell to Mitch
10-3.  Mitch was now 1-1 and had one more final to play.
Eight Ball
Mitch was going for two out of three, but to do so he would have to overcome the
defending state eight ball champion, George Teyechea.  The match started with
another early lead for the kid, but George stormed back to tie it up at the halfway
point 4-4.  From there it went 5-5, 6-6, and then hill / hill, with Mitch pulling the last
game out for his second title of the week.

Tucson's Main Street Billiards wishes to extend many thanks to all the participants
and fans alike who made this years state championship week a total success.
